Meleveetil
Damodaran is a leading figure in the Indian financial and corporate
sector. An officer of the prestigious Indian Administrative Services
since 1971, he has held several important positions in both, the
Central Government of India in New Delhi as well as the State
Government of the North Eastern state of Tripura. His many
contributions to India’s financial sector can be traced through his
astute stewardship of some of the largest financial institutions in
India viz. Unit Trust of India (now split into the UTI Mutual Fund
and the specified undertaking of the Unit Trust of India) and
Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI). He was responsible for
guiding these institutions through their difficult period and their
transformation back to good financial health. His final role before
retiring from Government Service in 2008 was as Chairman of
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), regulator of India’s
capital and financial markets. However, he continues to serve on
committees on issues ranging from financial markets, the economy,
corporate governance and customer services.
In the private sector, Mr. Damodaran serves as a mentor and advisor
to several companies. Besides being the Chief Representative in
India for the ING Group of Netherlands, he is an independent
director on the Boards of Hero Honda, Tech Mahindra, Sobha
Developers, Mahindra Satyam and a few other companies. He is also a
member of the Advisory Boards of Experian Credit Information Company
of India, Bessemer Venture Partners, Alvarez & Marsal, 3i
Infrastructure and a few others. He is also the first Chairman of
Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli. |
