AI Will Control Cooling at Google Data Centers

Google has entrusted an AI system developed by DeepMind to stop its data centers around the world from overheating. The AI system is able to reduce the amount of energy Google uses to cool its data centers by 40%. This first-of-its-kind cloud-based control system is now safely delivering energy savings in multiple Google data centers. DeepMind's deep neural networks looks at data from the cooling systems in Google's data centers every five minutes to predict how different combinations of potential actions will impact future energy consumption. The AI system then identifies which actions will minimize the energy consumption while satisfying a robust set of safety constraints. Those actions are sent back to the data center, where the actions are verified by the local control system and then implemented.

Oracle to Offer Data Transmitting Technique Tailored To ML

Oracle has developed an open source specification called “GraphPipe” for transmitting tensor data. The new technique is intended to increase efficiency of binary, memory-mapped format. A remote model accepts a request message and in return gives out one tensor per output name. The model also provides metadata about types and shapes of inputs and outputs. The technology addresses three challenges in ML domain, first, absence of any standard for model serving APIs, second, development of model server gets complicated, and third, serving tensor data from a complex model (like Python-JSON API) is insufficient for performance-critical applications

ML Tool to Design Cars with Superior Aerodynamics

University of Tokyo and IST Austria have developed a first of its kind ML method to model air flow around continuously editable 3-D objects. With successful implementation of this method, the time-consuming computation of aerodynamics properties of cars will get completed in a matter of few seconds. Current conventional methods require at least a day to finish the job. Both the input and output data need to be structured consistently for the ML algorithm to run. For 3-D objects, the structuring gets complicated. For this, they decided to use the so-called polycubes to make the shapes manageable for ML.

Google to Build an AI based Fitness & Health Assistant

As per reports, Google is currently working on a project titled as “Google Coach”. It is aimed at tracking data specifications for health and fitness. Its capabilities include recommending different workouts, suggesting alternatives in case of a miss and making detailed report on progress. Cap will be kept on the number of notifications the software will generate. Instead of getting tons of individual notifications, it will provide a single one with all information contained in it. The software will also be tracking meals and give suggestions accordingly.

Salesforce to Open Source Its ML Library For the Public

Salesforce has published “TransmogrifAI”, an automated ML library for structured data, and made it open source on GitHub for public use. It is capable of performing feature engineering, feature selection, and model training in just three lines of code. It is written in Scala and built on top of Apache Spark. The technology is the same that is being used in Salesforce AI platform “Einstein”. TransmogrifAI will offer a three-step workflow. First is feature inference and automated feature selection. Next step is automated feature engineering. Once features are extracted, it runs ML algorithms in parallel and automatically selects the best-performing model.

AI System to Predict Effective Behavior Change Strategy

IBM, UCL, University of Aberdeen and University of Cambridge have developed, “Human Behavior Change Project” which is aimed at developing an online system that people can use to query the global evidence on behavior change. It will be developed in three phases. In phase one, behavioral scientists will develop standardized vocabulary to describe key concepts and the relationships. Following that, ML algorithms will be developed based on manually extracted information. The third phase will see creation of an online interface to make this behavior change information easily accessible. Aim is to launch it by 2020.

AI to Analyse Coral Reef Resistance to Climate Change

“50reefs Initiative” was established in 2017 with aim of identifying coral reefs with chance of surviving the impacts of climate change. Researchers used 360-degree cameras to take more than 56,000 images of shallow water reefs in the coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island. In total, images of 3,851 square kilometers worth of reefs were taken. AI algorithms were used to identify these images, later on. Initially, 400 to 600 images were used to train AI to identify different coral and invertebrate types within the image. From the analysis, it was determined that Sulawesi reefs were in better shape in 2018 than when they were originally surveyed in 2014.

AI Used to Combat Luxury Fakes

Around 2.5% of global imports to the US are counterfeit or pirated goods. This amounts to about half a trillion dollars’ worth of merchandise. Goat and Entrupy are two very different companies that have developed anti-counterfeit algorithms based on immense databases of information on top luxury brands. They use these databases to look for the tiniest of inconsistencies, ensuring that customers get exactly what they pay for. Goat resellers submit photos of their shoes for human experts to analyze before shipping the shoes to Goat for AI authentication.

Physicists Discover Anti Particle to Skyrmions; New Option For IT Cos

Skyrmions are Nanosized magnetic particles which are considered promising candidates for new data storage and information technologies. Now physicists have discovered antiparticle equivalent of skyrmions in an experiment based on ferromagnetic material. It is called antiskyrmions. Magnetic properties of nanometer-thick material were analyzed using advanced computer simulations. With further developments, scientists are confident that in future, antiskyrmions could be a ready source of skyrmions. This will be critical for any application that uses skyrmions to transmit and store information.

Researchers Develop Quantum Transistor Using Just a Single Atom

A team of researchers at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed a quantum transistor using just a single atom, and capable of operating at room temperature. The new device is described as a so-called ‘quantum’ switch, meaning it can carry more complex information than the binary “on-off” signal of today’s transistors. According to the researchers, their innovation could have a major impact on the future of computing, particularly in energy efficiency. The switch could use less energy than today’s silicon technology by a factor of 10,000.
