AI Can Gauge the Risk of Dying from Heart Conditions

Researchers at MIT's CSAIL have developed a machine learning system, RiskCardio, that can estimate the risk of death due to cardiovascular issues that block or reduce blood flow. All it needs is a 15-minute ECG reading -- from there, it gauges the danger based on the sets of consecutive beats in the sample. If the data is captured within 15 minutes of an event, RiskCardio can determine whether someone will die within 30 days, or even up to a year later. Read More

AI Can Now Spot Skin Cancer

SkinVision is an app that lets users assess and track skin spots for changes over time. It works by asking users to snap a photo of concerning spots on their skin using their smartphone camera. Within 30 seconds of submitting this photo for review, an AI algorithm then delivers a risk assessment: either low, low with symptoms, or high. It does this by looking for telltale signs of skin cancer in spots, such as irregular patterns, multiple colors, asymmetry, size, and uneven borders. In the event that the app raises concerns, users can then visit a medical professional to get advice on what to do next. Read More

The AI suggests the closest bus stops or alternatively, it is possible to generate a customised route. The AI “Bus Brain” generates routes based on shopping history, maps and traffic information data. Read More

AI To Predict Power Outages During Storms

Auckland lines company, Vector, is going to start using AI to predict where storms will cause power outages. It uses satellite imagery and AI to show areas where trees might be encroaching on power lines. It can then suggest the locations most at risk of outages. The system would also predict weather-induced outages. Vector analyses previous storms and outages, and by combining those insights with weather forecasts that update every 15 minutes, the system could identify outage risks across the network "up to 72 hours in advance". The company has partnered with IBM to pilot the new system. Read More
