AI Model Predicts Inpatient Surgical Discharges

Kyan Safavi from the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and colleagues used more than 15,000 hospital discharges to develop an AI model which had an area under the receiver operating curve of 0.84 and identified 65 barriers to discharge. They developed the AI model and trained it on all adult inpatients at least 18 years old who underwent a surgical procedure in the operating room. The team used clinical and administrative data from a database linked to patients’ electronic health records, along with demographic and environmental information. The team suggests that the model could be used in the future to guide process improvement and increase timeliness of discharges through prioritization of patients and barrier identification. AI Detects Acute Myeloid Leukemia with High Reliability

An almost completely automated machine learning system based on genomic data was able to predict the onset of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as accurately as human experts. Researchers developed several AI algorithms using a vast collection of transcriptome data — more than 12,000 blood samples collected in 105 previous studies, with nearly one-third collected from AML patients — which denotes blood cells' gene activity. Once trained on the data, the machine learning algorithms searched transcriptome data for patterns specific to AML, tasked with retroactively identifying those blood samples diagnosed with the disease. AI-Based Brainwave Diagnostic System

Hipposcreen Neurotech (HNC) has introduced a stress electroencephalogram (EEG) assessment system, a diagnostic tool that combines AI algorithms and brainwave signal amplifying circuits. It only takes the system 90 seconds to measure brainwave signals and generate scientific data that help doctors diagnose and treat depression. HNC's system requires simple preparation procedures. The patient only needs to put on a black electrode cap and sit in front of the computer. Signals are collected through the electrodes. After the patient looks at the black cross on the screen for 90 seconds, an assessment report is generated to indicate the stress level with a colored distribution chart. Darker colors represent higher stress levels and the distance to the dark color zone indicates the subject's likelihood of having depression. Read More

AI System Beats Doctors in Detection Tests for Breast Cancer

Google Health has developed a system that can identify breast cancer more accurately than radiologists. Experts from Google Health and UK and US universities showed that the AI model reduced both false positives, in which patients are wrongly told they have cancer, as well as false negatives, where the disease is present but not diagnosed. New AI Model Can Predict Bowel Cancer Severity

Researchers have developed a new AI system which can help identify patients with bowel cancer, an advance that may help predict the severity of the malignant disease. The scientists leveraged AI techniques, where systems self-learned to perform specific tasks without explicit instructions, to develop a less invasive diagnostic method that can detect bowel cancer in at-risk patients. According to the study, the technology works by screening for methylation markers. The researchers first created a diagnostic model based on nine methylation markers associated with bowel cancer, which they identified by studying samples of the blood component plasma from 801 patients with the malignant disease, as well as 1,021 controls. This model accurately distinguished patients from healthy individuals with a sensitivity of 87.5% and outperformed a clinically available blood test named CEA. Read More

Chinese scientists have developed a quantum satellite ground station that is not only capable of sending ultra-secure messages anywhere in the world but also fits inside a family car. The mobile device, developed by the University of Science and Technology of China, weighs about 80kg (176lbs). With the addition of a 28cm (11 inch) telescope, it can connect to the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ quantum satellite known as Mozi and receive encryption keys in the form of entangled light particles.
