Humanoid Robot to Help Customers at Banks

HDFC bank has launched the updated version of humanoid robot called, IRA 2.0. Intelligent Robotic Assistant (IRA) can answer 4000 questions through voice-based navigation. Koramangala branch is hosting IRA which can answer bank-related queries and can even guide customers to relevant counters. It has indoor GPS navigation system which helps it to move inside the branch and a tablet for visual interactions with customers. In future, personalization like individual balance enquiries etc. will be added on.


Now Superior AI to Write Its Own Code

Scientists have created a deep-learning coding application called “Bayou” which can extract knowledge from online source code repositories like GitHub. With few keywords, Bayou will try to predict the program a programmer wants to write. It was trained on several Java codes. It creates a “sketch” for each program it reads and then associating this sketch with the “intent” that lies behind the program. Bayou is based on method called neural sketch learning which trains an artificial neural network to recognize high-level patterns in hundreds of thousands of Java programs.

Deep Learning Algorithms to Predict Emergency Room Visits

IBM has developed a model based on recurrent neural network to predict how many times a person will visit the ER based on information from his or her electronic health records (EHRs). It exhibits dynamic temporal behavior based on EHR data and models the correlation between ER visits and other patient data. It was 6.59% more accurate than logistic regression model in predicting whether a person will visit the ER, and more than 90% greater in predicting number of ER visits compared to linear regression model.


Nvidia Used AI to Reconstruct Damaged Images

Software maker Nvidia has introduced a new way to reconstruct images using artificial intelligence. It uses deep learning method and its process called “image inpainting”. It reconstructs image using missing pixels and can also replace graphics in a picture with computer-generated alternative. Current deep learning approaches focus on rectangular regions located around center of an image and require expensive post-processing. The model developed by Nvidia can handle holes of any shape, size location, or distance from the image borders.

Microsoft To Deploy Bots to Improve Employees’ Productivity

Microsoft is working on a conversational bot, "SwitchBot," to improve workers' focus. SwitchBot is a Skype bot designed with the aim to help workers detach and then re-engage at the start and end of their workdays. A detachment and re-attachment dialog framework was developed and tested on 34 information workers. The bot is built on Microsoft Bot Framework and its machine-learning service, Language Understanding and Intent Service (LUIS). Task-centric conversations like “What did you work on today?” and "How did you feel about work today?" were developed on the platform.


AI Algorithm to Highlight Cardiovascular Disease Via Phone Camera

University of Southern California researchers have developed an algorithm which allows patient to measure their pulse wave velocity using smartphone’s camera. Currently, arterial stiffening is measured using MRI or tonometry which requires two measurement points. The new proposed method will require just one. To test the algorithm, dataset of 5000+ tonometry results were re-examined. These recorded pulse wave velocities were compared against algorithm’s estimated values. Correlation of 0.85 was found.

Rentomojo Using ML to Create Credit Profiles of Users

RentoMojo, an online rental marketplace for furniture, home appliances and bikes, is deploying machine learning tools to analyze the credit worthiness of its customers. For its inventory management, it makes use of predictive analysis. Customer ranking is done based on their CIBIL score and the individual’s history on RentoMojo platform. Customers are also monitored on their timely EMI payments. If someone defaults, it adversely affects the score of that customer.


ML Technique to Help Soldiers Learn Faster Than Conventional Methods

US Army Research Laboratory has developed a ML technique that could help soldiers to learn 13 times faster than current conventional methods. With a low-costing, light-weighted hardware and collaborative filtering technique of ML, the algorithm can process information faster and deploy solutions, such as recognizing threats like vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. The aim is to make it a part of suite of tools embedded on the next generation combat vehicle.


Machine-Learning System Processes Sounds Like Humans Do

MIT researchers have created a model that can replicate human performance on auditory tasks such as identifying a musical genre. They used machine-learning technology called deep neural network for it. This model was used to see how human brain performs the same tasks and responds. It was found that information in human auditory cortex passes through successive stages of processing. Researchers trained their neural network to perform tasks involving speech and music. After several iterations, model learned to perform the task as accurately as a human brain.


An Automated Way to Build Road Maps Using Aerial Images

Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have created “RoadTracer”, an automated method to build road maps. Conventional method includes training neural networks to look at aerial images and classify them as either “road” or “not road.” They require post-processing as well as aerial images can be ambiguous. RoadTracer uses data from aerial imagery but builds maps step-by-step. They are 45% more accurate than current methods.
