AI Technology to be Used For Fixed Income Trading and Improve Liquidity

Liquidnet is betting big on the AI technology to revolutionize the fixed income markets. They are deploying AI algorithms to analyze and identify trends within data sets at a far greater speed compared to human counterparts. Effects of change in prices can be identified quickly and the saved time can provide with new unknown sources of liquidity. Further, ML models are being used to make index funds which can be used to predict performances of a specific set of bonds in a shorter time with greater accuracy. It is supported by sentiment analysis of news stories and social media to assign a rating to each bond.


Dropbox Launches ML Enabled Full-Text Search Engine

Dropbox has launched its new Nautilus ML-powered search engine for customers. The two major challenges in search algorithm for Dropbox were to make adjustments for personalized data of users and that the data was ever changing. The algorithm ranks the search results based on likelihood of user wanting the data “right now”. The model was trained using anonymized “click” data from the front end of the website. The algorithm developed is capable of learning set of “importance weights” to use for ranking search results and presenting only the most relevant ones.

AI to Predict Why Children Struggle at Schools

Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit have developed ML algorithms which uses data of several children who struggle at school and identifies clusters of learning difficulties they face even after receiving a diagnosis. They conducted research on 500+ children who were diagnosed with issues including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia etc. Testing data from each child was provided to the computer algorithm. Data includes measures of listening skills, spatial reasoning, problem solving, vocabulary, and memory. It fitted children into four clusters of difficulties: difficulties with working memory skills, difficulties with processing sounds in words, cognitive difficulties in many areas and children with typical cognitive test results for their age. The clustering was close to interpretation of other data including parents' reports of their communication difficulties, and educational data on reading and math.


ML Powered World’s First Indoor Farm

Hamilton, Ohio is planning to build a first of its kind fully automated indoor farm titled as, “80 Acres”. It will require very little water, and few people to run it and will be free from pesticides. Factors like CO2 levels, water requirements and deliberate stress on plant to get the right level of nutrition and flavor are all controlled by AI network. The algorithm connects sensors. It uses a closed loop hydroponic delivery system which allows recycling of water as well. This has resulted in a 97% drop in consumption of water as compared to a conventional farm.


ML to Help Decide Status of Coma Patients

Determining future state of coma hit patients is a difficult task. Injury to brain impairs response to external stimuli like light or movement. Chinese neurologists have used ML algorithm to solve this particular problem. Researchers fed fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) data from thousands of coma patients into the algorithm. It learned the determining factors and make predictions on how likely a patient is to recover. The initial results are positive with an accuracy rate of around 90%.


AI And Drone Technology to Spot Sharks on Beaches

Researchers from University of Technology Sydney and “The Ripper Group” have developed a cost-effective way to monitor population of sharks at beaches. The system is named, “SharkSpotter”. It makes use of AI, drone technology and computing power to first, identify stray sharks and second, alert the lifesavers to sharks which gets dangerously near to swimmers. It uses real-time aerial imagery to detect sharks in vicinity. The system analyses video from cameras attached to drones based on “Deep Learning” technology. Once detected, it is classified into one of 16 categories and if it is a shark, both visual indicator and audio alerts are issues to the operator.

Ford to Use NASA’s Quantum Computers

Ford Motor Company has signed up an agreement with NASA’s Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL) to use their quantum computer in its autonomous car research. Company will make use of QuAIL’s D-Wave 2000Qquantum annealer to resolve optimization problems. Annealers are capable of solving optimization and ML related problems at a much higher speed. Quantum tunneling, and interference is used to provide with the most efficient solution to the problem, the global minima of its optimization problem. NASA scientists will provide two or three optimization cases, train a Ford researcher in the use of its computer, and provide regular access to it.


Metamaterials to Traps Quantum Light

Conventional quantum computers store information in fundamental unit of logic called “bits” that can take a value of 0 or 1. One significant challenge for quantum computing is however, to make use of large numbers of qubits to work together. IT gets complicated as qubits start to interact with outside environment.
